Double knee pants are work pants with a second layer of fabric sewn over the knee — from mid-thigh to below the kneecap — so the part of the pant that takes the most abuse lasts two or three times longer. That’s the whole idea. It’s one of the oldest tricks in workwear, and it still works.
Why the second knee matters
Knees are where pants die. Kneeling on concrete, crouching at a lowboy fridge through a dinner service, crawling under a deck — the knee panel takes abrasion nothing else on the garment sees. A double knee spreads that wear across two layers of heavy fabric. When the outer layer finally wears through, the pant keeps working. Some makers leave the panel open at the bottom so you can slide in foam knee pads; others sew it closed for a cleaner line.
What they’re made of
Most double knees are cut from cotton duck canvas — a tightly woven, heavyweight cotton that resists tearing and abrasion and breaks in like denim: stiff at first, then molded to you. Weights typically run from 10 oz to 12 oz or more. Heavier fabric, longer life, longer break-in.
How double knee pants should fit
Straight and roomy through the thigh and knee — you need to be able to squat, kneel and climb without the fabric fighting you. They are not meant to fit like slim jeans. If you’re between sizes and you work in them, size for movement. Length matters too: too long and the hem shreds under your heel; a single cuff or a crop above the boot is the classic look for a reason.
Who makes them
Dickies and Carhartt built the category and still make solid, affordable double knees offshore. A handful of smaller makers cut them in North America at a higher price with heavier fabric and tighter construction. Ours is the Dufferin Double Knee Pant — heavyweight duck canvas, reinforced knees and seat, double-needle stitching, cut and sewn at our own factory in Parkdale, Toronto. And where most double knees stop at waist 48 or 50, the Dufferin runs 28 to 52 as standard.
Quick answers
Are double knee pants just for trades?
No — they started on job sites, got adopted by kitchens (kneeling, heat, constant motion), and crossed into everyday wear because the silhouette and durability hold up anywhere.
Do double knee pants run hot?
The double layer is at the knee only, so they wear about the same as any heavyweight work pant. In a hot kitchen, the durability trade-off is worth it.
How do I care for them?
Wash cold, hang to dry to keep the fit; wash hot and machine-dry if you want them to soften and shrink slightly. Full details in our duck canvas care guide.
